How to Use This Tool
- Choose the duration and read the original passage.
- Type the passage, preserving its spaces and punctuation.
- Read speed, accuracy and the actual elapsed time together.
Calculation Method
One standardized word means five characters, not one dictionary word. For a test lasting t minutes, raw WPM equals counted characters ÷ 5 ÷ t. Correct-character WPM uses the characters matching the displayed passage in the scored text. Accuracy is matching characters ÷ scored characters × 100. Read the result labels because other typing sites penalize errors differently.
Worked Example
For an independent example, 300 scored characters in one minute gives 60 raw WPM. When 285 match their intended positions, correct-character speed is 57 WPM and final-text accuracy is 95%. This example does not mean 300 physical key presses: Shift, Backspace and editing complicate that count.
Measure Speed with the Text Still Correct
Type the displayed passage using the language edition that matches the keyboard practice you want. The timer begins with the first accepted input. Preserve capitals, punctuation and spaces shown in the passage. These are part of the task, rather than optional decoration.
Use the same duration and passage difficulty for repeat comparisons. A short collection of familiar words is easier to memorize than an unfamiliar paragraph with accents and punctuation. Changing language can change keyboard effort even when the scoring formula stays the same.
Count Characters Before Comparing WPM
Corrections and Accents Matter
Correcting a typo consumes time. Under a final-text comparison, an error removed before finishing no longer remains as an incorrect character in the result. Consequently, final-text accuracy is not the percentage of all historical key presses that were correct. Do not compare those two metrics as though they were identical.
Keep the expected spacing and keyboard layout. A wrong space can shift later text against the reference. Input methods, autocorrection, prediction and composed accent characters can affect how text arrives. Use ordinary typing rather than paste or automatic text expansion to keep the exercise meaningful.
Interpret a Session Without Overstating It
A completed short passage may end before the selected maximum duration. Use the actual elapsed time shown with its result. An interrupted run or a switch to another task is a reason to restart, not a fair comparison with an uninterrupted session. Record duration, language, passage and error count with WPM.
What the Result Means
The tool is an informal local practice task, not a typing certificate or employment assessment. It does not measure every shortcut, editing skill or writing ability. A keyboard tester can investigate missing or repeated key events; that is a separate check from typing speed.
Common Questions
Why Does One Word Equal Five Characters?
This test uses a fixed scoring unit so word length does not change the formula. Spaces and punctuation count as characters. Correct-character WPM equals correct final-position characters divided by five and by elapsed minutes.
Do Corrections Count Against Accuracy?
Accuracy compares the final text with the reference by character position. Corrected characters can become matches. This is not a count of every erroneous key press, so compare it only with tests using the same rule.
